Digital Signage Small Screen Strategies

Got an iPad or tablet knocking around? Here are a bunch of ideas on how to put it to work.

ScreenCloud Post

So you’ve done it. Your TV screens are up on the wall and you’re nailing digital signage. You have engaging content that your audience really wants to look at, your staff have never been so keen and you have a strategy that’s actually aligned with your business metrics.

But let us ask you something: are all of your screens…. big? Not huge but you know, the size of your regular TV screen say 40 or 50 inches of powerful digital signage. If you aren’t already using iPads, tablets and other small screens to make more of your digital signage then you’re not the only one.

But you could be missing out on some low-hanging fruit that will make reaching your customer and upselling items so much easier.

Here, we take you through how and why to add the small screen to your digital signage strategy.

What small screens can be used for digital signage?

The beauty of small screens such as iPads and tablets is that for the most part, they’re already internet-savvy. This means you don’t need any additional hardware to get them working as a digital signage screen.

Take the iPad as an example. To set up digital signage all you need do is head to the App Store, download ScreenCloud and pair the number on screen with your online account. In those few simple steps, you can begin showing digital signage content on your iPad for all to see. An Android Tablet is just as simple.

This makes it truly easy to begin sharing digital content on even the smallest of screen types.

How should you use a smaller screen in digital signage?

Your regular sized digital signage screen is often a weapon of brand. You use it to share useful information and gain attention, in a way that promotes your products or services. The idea is not necessarily to drive action, so much as to get people to understand exactly what it is you offer.

The small screen on the other hand, drives decisions.

This could be getting someone to upgrade or take advantage of a promotion at the point of sale. The small screen is an ancillary screen if you like - it makes you look at the big screen (or brand) more. Due to the small screen’s size it can also be placed in areas that the big screen just can’t reach. The little nook by your till points, or on top of a bar where people are waiting for drinks.

Stuck for ideas on how to set your small screen up for success? We have a few.

Share promotions

Our eyes are naturally drawn to screens and especially to smaller devices like iPads and tablets. Use this to your advantage by using a small screen placed at your point of sale to drive decisions. With one of these mount options, you could securely fix a small screen to a bar, counter, till or tradeshow booth. Getting your promotions, upsells and upgrade options under your customer’s nose at point of purchase is guaranteed to increase sales.

Provide information

Want to know one of our favourite uses of the smaller screen? Meeting room digital signage. Fix your iPad or tablet to the wall, employ our Meeting Room Scheduling Software and you can easily display who’s booked that room at any time. All your employees need to do to see if a room’s free, is glance at the wall. Making life oh-so-simple. Other information sources could be sharing digital menus in your caféteria or coffee shop or even providing wayfinding information in your hospital.

Give discreet details

The small screen is the big screen’s discrete little sister. Because of its size, it can only really be viewed by one or two people who are within a metre or two of the screen itself. This makes it the ideal canvas to display information or details that you perhaps don’t want displayed for everyone to see. This could be Slack messages from specific departments, outstanding customer support tickets, directions around a building or meeting room bookings.

Entertain

As well as all of the wonderfully useful examples above you could also use the smaller screen to simply entertain. Remember when those digital photo frames came out what a hit they were? Well your iPad or tablet could become just that. Fix your screen up to your Dropbox account to easily create a photo gallery or use a folder in Google Drive or iCloud and you can be sharing the latest company photos in seconds.

Encourage the absorption of information

Another big benefit of the small screen is that people can get up close and personal. This means they can actually read details and absorb information that might otherwise be out of reach. Great examples include customer testimonials, thank you notes and even social media posts which may be too small to be seen on your big screen. Not only does this get your content out into the world, it also encourages visitors to linger longer as they read their own personal display board.
